Michael Scherer Commits to Mizzou's football program

The MICDS football star chooses the Tigers over many other Division I schools.

MICDS senior to be Michael Scherer was able to travel the country as a highly recruited football player.

But Scherer has decided to stay at home as he recently made a commitment to the University of Missouri.

Scherer had also made trips to USC, Alabama, Nebraska, Iowa, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Arkansas, California, Stanford, Boston College and Illinois.

"It came down between Missouri and Stanford," said the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder. "I had a great trip and visit with the coaches at Stanford and it would have been nice to have been there with my brother (Dan Scherer, who recently completed his freshman season at Stanford), who is my best friend.

"But I really enjoyed my visit to Mizzou. I talked to some of the former players and to some of the current players and it seems more like a family than other schools. I liked Missouri and their coaches from the very beginning. They treated me really well."

Scherer, who led the Rams in tackles last year with 68 and also in rushing with 919 yards, was recruited by most teams, including Mizzou, as a linebacker.

"Some of the bigger schools talked about maybe using me as an H-back, tight end," Scherer said. "I would enjoy that but I really prefer defense."

Scherer said the long recruiting process was one he will always remember.

"It was a once in a lifetime thing and it got pretty crazy at times," Scherer said. "It was interesting to be in the office of the coaches you see on TV all the time. I got to try on so many rings. I got to travel all over the country but it did get tough after a while."

Scherer had originally thought that he would make his final decision early in his senior season.

"I talked to my dad a lot and other people and they all said that if you could get it done before your senior season to go ahead and do it," Scherer said. "After a while it just got to the point where I couldn't see myself playing anyplace other than Missouri. Of course, one of the selling points was the fact that I am close to home and my family and friends will get a chance to see me play."

And hopefully, that will come sooner than later.

"I think if I work hard I have a good chance of contributing right away at Mizzou," Scherer said. "That would be great if I can play early."
