MICDS Students Jump Rope For Hearts

Beasley students jump rope to benefit the American Heart Association.

On Valentine’s Day, students in the Ronald S. Beasley Lower School at MICDS put their hearts into “overdrive” for the sake of helping mend others. Children in grades Junior Kindergarten through Four participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart activity to benefit the American Heart Association.

The students raised a total of $1,445 in contributions to the Heart Association according to Sue Orlando, Beasley Physical Education teacher. Orlando and her teaching colleague Jim Lohr were the organizers of the annual event.

In addition to jumping rope, the children completed an obstacle course, “hula-hooped,” and could walk, run or jog around the track in the McDonnell Athletic Center. It was all good exercise and all for a good cause.

“This is an afternoon dedicated to fitness,” said Janet McMillion, Head of Lower School. “It’s a way to play together across grade levels in Beasley, while practicing some important skills. We always do this event on Valentine’s Day, so that while we think about loving each other, we can also think about expanding our hearts and doing good for others.”

The students look forward to collecting pledges and participating in this event each year. Third grader Ashley K. enjoyed sharing it with friends, and because they got to learn about goal-setting. “We’ve set goals for our activity,” she explained. “We have a stopwatch and we are pacing ourselves to meet them.”

First grader Anagayle S. said the best thing about the day was being able to jump rope for a good cause. Third grader Carter E. agreed. “I like the fact that we are raising money and can do something fun to help others,” he said.
