MICDS Soccer Enjoys Perfect Start to the Season

Rams shut out Visitation Academy 2-0 for a four-win start to the year.

The soccer game between the girls of Visitation Academy and MICDS Wednesday was downright physical. More than a few players were splattered to the turf. A yellow card was handed to a Rams player.

When the smoke cleared, the Rams had won 2-0, and were off to a 4-0 start to the season. A coach could hardly ask for more.

Seems that if a goal is going to be scored by MICDS, it will come from Amber Jones, Klasey Medelberg, Caroline Militello or Claire Ringenberg.

The Rams held true to form. In the first half, Militello drilled a header into the Visitation Academy goalkeepers hands. The ball sprung loose, and Medelberg blasted the rebound into the net.

In the second half, Militello struck a shot into the goal post, and on the rebound, Jones scored her fifth of the young season.

Liz, Lewis, all 5-foot-3 of her stood tall in nets, recording her third shutout (1 shared) in four matches this season.

Visitation coach Dick Westbrook was mad, and said so. “We had a big win over Cor Jesu (2-1 Tuesday) and all my girls thought was all we had to do was show up and we’d win.” Obviously, that did not happen.

These are two teams headed in different directions. While Viz is 2-3 and struggling; the Rams are undefeated, going into games this week Friday at Lutheran North; Monday home with Notre Dame and Tuesday at Principia.

“I think both teams came to play hard today,” said MICDS’ coach Michael Black. “We’ve been working hard to match up with teams like Viz, who normally are physical enough to push us around. I don’t think we let that happen today, so I was proud of that.”

Asked, when the team had a 2-0 lead midway through the second half, were the Rams looking to score more, or drop back and play preventive defense?

“Both,” said Black with a laugh. “What we did was slowly get a little more conservative. We moved one of our mids back and we dropped one of our forwards into the midfield. We didn’t do that until about 10 minutes left in the game.”

Black thinks his sophomores have taken a big step up from last year. He really likes the action of Jones and Medelberg.

Lewis says her goal keeping skills are developing. “I always live in fear of those one on ones, and I’ve worked really hard on that in practice. I was prepared for that. I’m already pretty small, so everyone looks pretty big to me,” said Lewis.
