MICDS Showcases Tough Defense in Rout Over Lutheran South

The Rams take advantage of a young Lutheran South team in a commanding ABC League victory, 48-7.

Late-evening steam sizzled off the field, but that didn’t stop MICDS from rolling over Lutheran South last night, 48-7 at Lancer Stadium.

The Lancers turned the ball over four times in the contest, leading to three Rams scores.

Early in the first quarter, Jack Howell recovered a Lancer turnover and ran all the way back for the first score of the game. After that the Rams didn’t look back, scoring 41 unanswered points. The Rams defense was nearly perfect as they only allowed one touchdown in the contest.

“We were very focused,” MICDS (2-0) head coach Josh Smith said. “Our execution was decent coming off a long week.”

Lutheran South drops to 0-2 after this tough loss. After graduating 90 percent of its offense, head coach Chuck Faucette is still trying to find his offensive groove.

“This isn’t a sprint, we’re in it for the long haul” Faucette said. “That’s a very good [MICDS] team out there. We made a lot of mistakes, but we’re a young team and we’re going to go back to work tomorrow and improve.”

Senior quarterback Thomas Militello led the Rams as they used multiple receivers and the ground game to produce the lopsided score. By the third quarter, MICDS put in their second team.

“They had a tough 4-3 defense, we played well and we’ll learn from it and we’ll hopefully beat Burroughs next week,” Militello said. He added that MICDS’s offensive line played great and their receiver’s blocked well.

Running Backs Denzell Conway (67 yards) and A.J Washington (89 yards) were the leading rushers and wide receiver Mac Cornwell had three receptions for 30 yards.

“We’re pushing through a senior class that’s showed a lot of leadership,” Smith said.

The Lancers’ only score of the game came in the third quarter when quarterback Dalton Schumer connected with Nathan Dehn, making the score 48-7. Down 41 points, Lutheran South never stopped hustling, which a trait that coach Faucette attributes to his team’s fighting sprit.

“Like I’ve always told them, we can fix things on the field,” Faucette said. “I can’t fix heart and these kids have it.”

MICDS star running back Michael Scherer had five carries for 41 yards, and three tackles, in limited action.

The Rams battle rival John Burroughs at 2:30 p.m. at home on Sept. 10 and the Lancers are on the road against Lutheran North Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
