MICDS Rams Show Borgia Knights Night Time in 39-17 Demolition

Perfect 13-0 Rams have date next with Farmington, winners over Gateway Tech.

Midway through the third quarter two way star Michael Scherer barged in on the St. Francis  Borgia punter getting a piece of the ball. It popped out of his hands and defensive tackle Todd Hearns scooped it up, turning the defender into a running back. It was simple from there. Hearnes rambled from midfield setting up the next scoring opportunity on the Borgia 28-yard line.

Senior quarterback Thomas Militello fired a 28 yard TD to Clayton Buddemeyer on first down and the MICDS Rams turned the lights out for the Borgia Knights, winning going away in the semifinals of the Class 4 football playoffs, 39-17.

“I thought I had it. It squirted away from me. I thought I could get a TD,” said an obviously please Scherer.

Scherer scored three TDs, in the game, his 19th, 20th and 21st for the season. Two came on short distances, taking a direct snap in his familiar Wildcat role. His last score came in the first half of a 19 yard dash for paydirt.

Scherer almost never gets off the field, playing running back, middle linebacker and attacker on special teams. “Oh, yes, I’m tired after a game,” he revealed.

Militello went about his business, firing up TD strikes to Jack Howell in the first quarter for 17 yards; hitting Howell again for 34 yards in the third quarter and the toss to Buddemeyer before sitting down.

Defense came up big for MICDS in the convincing home game win. Jack Howell intercepted Borgia quarterback John Baumstark, setting up the chance to go up 32-3.

Borgia got some late points on a 10 yard TD pass to Robbie Vossbrink and a four yard run by Jacob Haskins with just 1:14 left in the contest.

The MICDS defensive line was relentless, sacking Baumstark time and again and stifling the Knights running game. Peter Schlafly and Hearnes spent a lot of time in the Knight’s backfield.

You know things were going the Rams’ way when punter Otie George got off a 66-yarder, digging his team out of deep trouble in the second half.

Scherer rushed 16 times for 114 yards. He also had three tckles and one sack and that blocked punt.

Militello was good on 13 of 19 passing for 185 yards and 3 TDs.
