When Ladue’s 6-foot-3 senior center Taylor Robinson makes up her mind to go to the hole, there is probably not a defender on this planet who can stop her.
Unfortunately for the Ladue Rams, Robinson just gained her second-half eligibility and is battling to get back into shape and into the starting lineup.
Robinson started the game on the bench as the host MICDS Rams fired up a full court suffocating defense and a spirited running game to build a 19-0 lead. By the time Robinson got into the game (4:50 in the first quarter), all Ladue’s coaches could do was sit and watch.
“When they build a 19-0 lead, our entire game plan was completely out the window. At that point, it’s just survival time,” said Ladue’s coach Cord Dockery who could only scratch his head.
By the time the host Rams had built 55-24 third-quarter lead, they had forced a running clock for the final 8 minutes of play. MICDS coasted to victory, 67-35.
Winning coach Scott Small, who saw the record improve to 12-1 thought things went well. “I think our kids came fired up. We came out solid at first, hit shots early which we haven’t done in a while.”
MICDS continued to full court press Ladue after every successful shot. “We can roll lines of people who can play well and we just kept the pressure up.”
Freshman Rachel Thompson had a very productive night for MICDS, scoring 14. “We have different people who can step up and we play very hard and that’s what makes us dangerous,” he said.
Emily Kyman was high scorer for MICDS with 15 points.
Robinson ended up with 22 points, 18 scored in the second half. But quarters of 9 and 5 in the first half put Ladue too far back to contend.
Robinson had four personal fouls in the first half, and laid off blocking shots the rest of the game.
“They are a very good team. You really don’t get that picture until you are on the court,” said Ladue’s Dockery.
“We tried to prepare our girls the best we could and we told them we are very good. I think it took us 18-0 or 19-0 to figure it out,” said Dockery.
Ladue fell to 9-5 and plays McCluer Berkeley South next.
The MICDS Rams will host rival John Burroughs Friday, tipoff is 6 o’clock.
