MICDS Closes Out Districts With a 35-7 Win Over Clayton

Rams 10-0 record, a far cry from 5-5 a year ago.

There’s a list of schools in the MICDS locker-room. That is a list of teams that claimed wins over the Rams one year ago. One by one, the Rams chopped names off that list: first Maplewood, Burroughs, Jeff City Helias, Ladue and finally Clayton.

Some did not come easy. Like the season opening one point overtime win at Maplewood. Or the scintillating come-from-behind 56-55 win over Ladue.

But last night, it was all Rams as they sewed up a 10-0 regular season record with an easy 35-7 win over host Clayton.

Next is a first-round match in the state tournament of the Soldan-Sumner winner. The game is 7 p.m.Wednesday at Kirkwood.

Senior quarterback Thomas Millitello cranked it up once more, firing a 51 yard strike to Jack Howell, capping a six play, 80-yard drive first quarter drive. The other TD, the 30th this season was a nice open 22 yard throw to Foster Bundy with 5:33 left on the first half clock and a bulging 21-0 lead.

A.J. Washington opened the second-half scoring binge with an 11-yard scamper, capping a 7 play, 50 yard drive. MICDS' last TD was by two-way performer Michael Scherer who bulled his way up the middle on a 20 yard run with 9:23 left on the third quarter clock.

With a 35-point lead running clock in progress, Cailer Keaton sailed 24 yards midway through the fourth quarter for the Greyhounds only score of the game.

Another one of those 2010 loses was checked off the list.

“This is a long journey. We figure we’re about two-thirds of the way there. We’d like to win the whole thing,” said an obviously pleased coach Josh Smith.

His defense was solid. Both lines played exceedingly well. He substituted reserves at will throughout the fourth quarter.

The Rams are now off until the first round of the playoffs begin Wednesday night.
