MICDS, Burroughs Very Much Alive in Football Playoffs

Rams host Borgia Knights; Burroughs heads for rematch at Ste. Genevieve.

Next up, the state quarterfinals of football Saturday.

Somethings going to have to give.

(12-0) Borgia at (12-0) MICDS, 1:30 p.m.

One of these undefeated teams will fall from the ranks. The other will be one win away from the 2011 Show Me Bowl.

This certainly is a prize worth fighting for.

The Borgia Knights have been making a living with a stingy defense. They have allowed just 157 points in 12 games while scoring 401. Some say Dale Gildehaus has a Green Bay Packers type of defense.

MICDS will load it up at home Saturday. Coach Josh Smith looks at it this way:

“We are excited about getting to host another game on Ellis field.

Borgia is a team much like ourselves with a strong tradition and an undefeated season.

When they are on offense the QB has been terrific for them both throwing and running the ball. We are going to have to try and get the ball out of his hands, and be accountable for him on the run.

When they are on defense, in close games, they have forced big turnovers at critical times. We need to continue to execute at a high level, and we must take care of the ball.

Our last game with Borgia was in the semifinal round at Borgia where we won in triple overtime. We are expecting a great football atmosphere on Saturday and we are looking forward to the opportunity this game presents," said Smith.

Thomas Militello enters the game as a 68 percent passer with 3,609 yards, 34 TD strikes and just 7 interceptions.

When he deals, it usually goes to senior wideout Jack Howell.  Howell has recorded 48 receptions for 854 yards and 15 TDs. He might throw in the flats to A.J. Washington or Michael Scherer.

Scherer gets 6.7 yards every time he carries the ball for 1,065 yards and 18 TDs on the ground. Washington has rushed for 730 yards and 9 TDs. Scherer has 22 total TDs.

Borgia is riding the throwing arm of John Baumstark, a 54 percent passer with 1,626 yards and 23 TDs and 9 interceptions.

Ray Smith has rushed for 874 yards and 9 TDs, 6.4 yards per carry. Baumstark has picked up 859 yards and 7 TDs.

Jared Mohesky has 505 yards and 7 TDs catching the ball and Robbie Vossbrink has been good for 490 yards and 6 TDs.

John Burroughs (11-1) at Ste. Genevieve (10-2), 1:30 p.m.

How do you spell rematch? On Oct. 1, Burroughs ran roughshod over the Dragons at home, 41-21.

Expect this one to be closer.

Davey Holmes continues to entertain, connecting on 1,765 yards, 25 TDs, 7 interceptions and a 65 percent completion mark.

He loves to throw the ball to Nathan Adams, the gritty receiver with 38 catches for 595 yards and 7 TDS, 13.7 yards per catch.

Ezekiel Elliott has been mostly an unstoppable running back. The trackster has dashed for 1,451 yards, 27 TDs, 9.2 yards average per carry.

Defensively, linebackers Christian Bledsoe, Bear Kaminer and Sam Hefler have combined for 209 tackles.

Ring leader for Ste. Gen is Brendan Weiler, quarterback who averages 234 yards per game passing, another 83 yards rushing and a total average of 317 yards per game.
