MICDS Boys, Girls Alive in Own Tourney; St. Joe Faces Cor Jesu tonight

Holiday hoops fill the courts all over the St. Louis region.

The presents have all been unwrapped. The dishes are done and now its time to get back to hoops-high school style.

All the Ladue-Frontenac Patch teams will see action this week in a wide variety of holiday tourneys.

Both the boys and girls teams of MICDS are in the winners’ bracket of their own gathering. Burroughs boys meet Mehlville in the first round of the Chaminade tournament Wednesday while the St. Joe Angels are back on the court later tonight in the the prestigious Visitation Academy Holiday Festival.

Fresh off three wins in four games in the Nike Tournament of Champions, the Angels, 9-1 meet Cor Jesu in the 8:30 p.m. quarterfinal game at Viz tonight. Cor Jesu is 6-1, winners over Webster Groves in their opening game.

Revenge might be on the minds of St. Joe, but they can ill afford to look too far ahead. Last year, before a turn-away crowd, St. Joe was edged by rival Incarnate Word Academy in the title game 64-63. The Angels sprinted off to Florida for the Naples tournament the next day. Maddie and Morgan Stock and Sydney Stipanovich have been carrying most of the load for Julie Matheny’s team.

Other quarterfinal matches are Kirkwood and Lafayette at 4:00 p.m.; IWA and Principia at 5:30; Host Visitation and Fort Zumwalt West at 7:00, and the finale St. Joe and Cor Jesu at 8:30 p.m.

The semifinals are 7 and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and the championship 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

This is the first year for MICDS to have a girls division of their tournament. Wednesday, Villa Duchesne meets Whitfield at 1:30 p.m. while MICDS takes on Parkway Central at 4:30 p.m. in the two semifinal games in an eight team field. Their championship will be contested Friday at 6:00 p.m.

On the boys side, Wednesday, Whitfield meets Parkway South at noon; Westminster takes on St. Mary’s at 3:00 p.m.; Lutheran North faces MICDS at 6:00 p.m. while St.Louis U. High takes on Duchesne at 7:30 p.m. Semifinals are Thursday at 6:00 and 7:45 p.m.and the championship Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Ladue girls (4-3) will be in the three-day eight-field tournament. The Lady Rams face Affton on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. The finals are on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
