MICDS' Athletic Director Don Mauer Recognized by the American Cancer Society

Don Mauer, athletic direcotor at Mary Institute Country Day School and former basketball coach was presented Saturday with the American Cancer Society’s Stephanie Phillips Survivorship Award.

This award is presented each year to person in the Eastern Missouri Region sporting community who exemplifies strength and courage in the fight against cancer.

Maurer is a survivor of prostate cancer and has participated on the Coaches vs. Cancer committee since the beginning of the program in 2010.

He has been a long-time supporter of the American Cancer Society through his school involvement at MICDS, which is typically the region's top fundraising school and has raised approximately $100,000 over 10 years for the Society in support of research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Mauer received the award on Saturday, December 22 at the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tip Off Breakfast, which takes place the morning of the Missouri Illinois Bragging Rights game.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The program empowers basketball coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.  

Maurer has actively worked to bring professionals into schools to speak to students on cancer prevention; he is an educator, an advocate and a survivor whose story inspires others.

Mauer, who has battled cancer himself and has other loved ones fighting the disease, received this award because of his outstanding volunteer work and what he brings to our local communities. 

The local Coaches vs. Cancer initiative conducts several events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for cancer through local school sports programs.

Some of the main events include the Tip-Off Breakfast held in conjunction with the Illinois-Missouri Bragging Rights Game and the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout which will take place this year on January 31, featuring high great high school basketball teams from MO, IL, and KY. MICDS meets St. Louis U. High in this year's event.
