Making History: Greg Gannon Throws Ladue's First Perfect Game in 58 Years

Gannon recorded 13 strike outs against 15 batters in 20-0 win.

Hands down, this was the No. 1 story in Ladue this past week. Fifteen batters went to the plate and Ladue hurler Greg Gannon did not allow one single batter to reach first base. One more time:

History was made Wednesday afternoon on the West Campus home-field of the Ladue Rams baseball team. Greg Gannon, rangy right-hander threw the first perfect game in 58-year history of Ladue baseball.

“Ladue has had a lot of no hitters, but this is the first recorded perfect game,” said Rams coach Rob Garrett.

Gannon was spectacular on the mound, whiffing 13 of 15 Jennings batters in a train-wreck 20-0 victory. The Rams improved to 6-2 and host Priory Thursday. Gannon faced the limit of 15 batters over 5 innings.

Only 2 of 15 Jennings batters even got a bat on the ball. Montrez Towns opened the game by lining out to Lucas Tamaren in deep center.

The only other bat to touch the ball was a soft roller off the bat of Anthony Goodlow, going out Cannon to first baseman Matt Munfakh in the visitors half of the third inning. The other 13 batters who came to the plate over five innings struck out.

“I just asked God to give me calmness,” said Gannon. “All I wanted to do was keep this game under control,” he said.

The guys on the bench call their pitcher “Gannon the cannon.”

Gannon is planning on going to the University of Missouri, but will not walk on the baseball team. Might he reconsider that choice? "I'm listening if there are any offers," he said.

His catcher Turner Miller called a great game. Miller described Gannon’s out pitch this way: “When we need an out, I call for his fastball high or away.”

“All I can think about was getting outs,” said Miller.

Garrett was thrilled to witness history from the bench. Telling his team: “To do this, you’ve got to have a great pitcher on the mound and a great catcher behind the plate.”

Garrett was eager to praise the defense behind the battery. But handling just two balls in the field over the course of five innings, they were hardly challenged.

Ladue’s big uprising came in a 10-run second inning. The 10 runs came on 7 hits with 3 errors and 2 passed ball.

With one out, Gabe Grand walked. Jason drove in Grand with an RBI single and wound up on second on an error. Daniel Scheinbein delivered an RBI single to center scoring Blanke who reached third on a triple and scored on a throwing error. Miller reached first on an error and with runners on second and third, scored on a wild pitch. Gannon drove in a run with a single, and Grand, batting for the second time in the inning reached first on catcher interference.

Tamaren delivered a one run on an RBI double to center and the Rams were up, 13-0 after two.

The Rams got three runs in the first inning. With one out in the first, Scheinbein delivered a 2 RBI standing double to center. Miller smacked an RBI single with an error on the right field. Miller scored on a sacrifice fly and the Rams led 3-0 after one.

Garrett unloaded his entire bench before the game was over. “I am very proud of this team. They all gave a great effort. He said his team is doing everything he’s asked of them this season.
