Last Chance to See the MWAA Soccer Conference Title Game

Villa and MICDS battle it out for first place on the Rams turf at 5:15 p.m. today.

Editor's note: This game is scheduled for now on the turf field at MICDS at 5:15 p.m. today. Stay tuned for any updates.

Today at 4 o’clock will be the last chance to see the battle for the MWAA soccer crown. Villa Duchesne, with an 11-3-2 record (4-0) in conference invades MICDS, 15-6-0 (4-1 in conference).

If Villa wins, they take the title outright. If MICDS wins, the Rams co-share the title with the visitors. Winner almost takes all.

The game will feature contrasts in style. The Rams are loaded up top, and get lots of scoring production from sophomore Caroline Militello and newcomers, freshmen Amber Jones and Courtney Kaplan.

Militello leads the Rams with 24 goals, 24 assists for 70 points and 8 game winning goals. She is of the long-legged type along with Kaplan who likes to torment goalkeepers. Kaplan has notched 21 goals, 12 assists for 54 points. The question will be how strong is the Rams defense. Will they protect veteran keeper Campbell Torchin who until now has a goals against average of 0.797 goals per game with 8 shutouts. The senior, headed to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles has rarely been tested.

Villa, meanwhile gets good wing play from two unsung heroes, Cara Scozafava and Kaitlin Springer. They feed the forwards with precision passing.

Senior Megan Hillerman is top gun for Villa with 9 goals, 10 assists for 28 points. Coach Tim Twellman has a goal keeping decision to make. He can play Andrea Hermann (9-1 in the nets) or Hannah Benben (2-2-1) in five games. Benben can play up top if Hermann starts the game.

Michael Black, coach of MICDS informed his squad that his team did it to Villa last year (beating them for the title) and Villa has the chance to turn the tables later today.

No doubt, locally, this is the soccer game of the season.
