Ladue Tramples Clayton in District Playoffs, 46-21

No one has to remind Ladue’s coach Mike Tarpey that injuries are part of the game. With less than 30 seconds remaining until half time of the district game at Clayton, two-way star Deavin Edwards severely sprained his ankle making a tackle on a Greyhound runner.

The loss could be devastating to the Rams’ chances this year. Edwards scored once in the 46-21 victory over Clayton and had 59 yards rushing on nine carries before hobbling off the field. He has 26 TDs and nearly 2,000 yards gained on the ground this season. Doctors might sideline him the rest of the way.

“We have to have players step up and make big plays and take Deavin’s part,” said Tarpey. Like Michael Horton-Loftin who blasted his way into the end zone on a 9 yard yard run to tie the game to take the lead of 28-14 with 22 seconds left in the third quarter.

Brandon Carr stepped up his game. He fired a two-yard TD to Sam Glancy and connected on TD passes to Jehu Chesson of 55 and 19 yards and threw in a 69 yard strike to Chase Lambie to complete the route.

Hamm Hooper intercepted Clayton freshman phnom Jake Brown for 65 yards down to the Clayton 9 where Horton-Loftin completed the drive.

Brown was sensational. He fired a 31 yard TD to Tyler Walker to open the scoring. He threw a 20 yard TD to Aaron Adams and a fourth quarter 27 yarder once more to Walker.

It was a great game for Carr who completed 10 0f 18 throws for 236 yards and 4 TD strikes.

Scott Weisman, first year head coach for the Greyhounds threw caution to the wind. He converted on a fake punt for a first down, but came up short on an on-sides kick in the second half.

“Our offensive line played great. They’ve been doing that all season long,” said Tarpey. “We lost Deavin and plenty of players stepped up and made big plays,” he said.

Ladue has now erased the stinging memory of the 56-55 loss to MICDS. They need to beat University City Thursday night at St. Louis U. High to assure a spot in the playoffs next week.
