Ladue Responds To State Guidance On Student Transfers

A state supreme court ruling allows students from unaccredited school districts to transfer to outside districts.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on Wednesday issued guidelines for school districts to follow now that the Missouri Supreme Court has ruled that parents of children in unaccredited school districts have the right to transfer their children to better schools at no cost.

School districts around suburban St. Louis, including Ladue, have been monitoring the legal proceedings, known in court vernacular up until recently as the "Turner vs. Clayton" case for several years, concerned that the ultimate decision could result in a flood of new students.

According to the guidance issued Wednesday:

  •  Parents would have the ability to request a particular building assignment  in the receiving district, although that district would have final say.
  • Students would be eligible to participate in MSHSAA-sanctioned activities sponsored by the receiving district.
  • A student from an unaccredited school district would be allowed to complete the academic year in the receiving district if the "home" district's accreditation is restored in the middle of a school year.
A Ladue School district spokeswoman said Wednesday "We are appreciative of DESE's guidance for compliance with the Breitenfeld v. Clayton decision and will continue to work through the logistics of implementing appropriate processes as additional information is provided to us."
