Ladue Declaws Affton 48-39 In First Round of Hancock Holiday Tournament

Taylor Robinson dominates the inside game with 26 points.

If you look in the box-score, you’d see that won over Affton in the first round of the Hancock girls holiday tournament 47-39. But, it was much, much closer than that.

With 5:07 left in the game, the Lady Cougars held a momentary 32-31 lead, hacking away at an earlier 10-point deficit.

Ladue’s coach Cord Dockery was not pleased. He held a fairly lengthy team meeting at the conclusion of the match in the Tiger Dome at Hancock.

This is a tournament that last year saw the Rams run off three wins and head into January undefeated. A year ago, the Lady Rams ran off the first 20 wins of the season before falling to Whitfield. The hill is a steeper climb this year. Lauren Maclin is playing ball at Forest Park Community College and 6-foot-3 center Taylor Robinson gets to carry the front-line load.

“I wish Lauren was around. She was a big help. But that’s the way it is,” said Robinson, who dominated the inside and lead all scorers with 26 points.

Robinson, a junior, is being courted by big time schools the likes of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Saint Louis U. and other Midwestern powers.

Robinson converted two key layups in the last minute and a half of play and knocked down pressure free throws to seal the deal.

Kate Holloway, a senior guard is expected to lead the way into 2012. Playing out of control at points, Dockery sat her on the bench the end of the third quarter and most of the final quarter. “Sometimes I just need to come out and get myself under control. When I finally got back in, I was in the right frame of mind,” said the senior guard.

Holloway stole the ball in the waning seconds to wrap up the victory, the fifth in eight games. Shannon Colmo turned in a 10-point performance to lead Affton. The Rams defended well against Hali Ford who is headed to Colorado State.

The Rams face the winner of St. Pius X of Festus vs Hancock in the semifinals Wednesday at one o’clock.
