John Burroughs Remains Hot, Defeats MICDS in Soccer

The Bombers score three first half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Rams Monday at MICDS.

The John Burroughs-MICDS soccer match-up Monday afternoon at MICDS was one with teams going in different directions.

The Bombers had been on a hot streak, winning four games in a row before falling to undefeated Priory last Thursday.

MICDS had lost six of its last seven games.

The streaks continued Monday as John Burroughs scored three first half goals and cruised to a 4-1 victory. That avenged a 2-1 overtime loss to the Rams on Sept. 10.

"I think we are playing close to our best soccer of the season," said Burroughs' junior Dannie Nightingale, who had a pair of goals for the Bombers. "It is always special when we play MICDS. I think we are in a good position to win districts and I think we are capable of winning state."

John Burroughs last won a district title in 2008. That began a run which climaxed with a state championship.

The Bombers are seeded first in the Class 1 District 4 Tournament in which they host. John Burroughs plays Brentwood Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by a game between Whitfield and Principia. The winners play for the district title Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m.

"I feel that we are one of the stronger Class 1 schools around and have a chance to do some good things this season," Bombers coach Alan Trzecki said. "Whitfield is the defending champ though and they always seem to play well at this time of the season."

The Bombers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 27 minutes of the game Monday on goals by Nightingale, Cole Warner and Joe Renner.

"They really got off to a quick start and had a couple of great goals," MICDS coach Terry Murray said. "That was a hard way for us to start although I was pleased with the way we played the second half."

Nightingale scored his second goal of the game midway through the half before Nicholas Rizzo scored for MICDS with 10 minutes to play.

"I was disappointed that we didn't finish the game stronger," Trzecki said. "We lost a little focus and energy after going up 4-0. But we had some good combination plays, good organization and some composed finishing earlier in the game. We have put together a nice string of shutouts recently and really played well in the game against Priory despite the loss."

MICDS also begins district play Saturday. The Rams will play University City in the opening round of the Class 2 District 5 Tournament at 10 a.m. with the winner going up against top-seeded and undefeated Priory Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. at Gay Field in Clayton.
