Ivy League Schools: Put Out the Welcome Mat for Track Star Amos Bartelsmeyer of MICDS

School record falls in the wake of his 800 meter performance on top of a 1600 meter win.

Amos Bartelsmeyer of MICDS is one cool customer. This lanky, 6-foot-0 junior is absolutely terrorizing opponents on the track this spring. On the friendly confines of Weiss track at the Rams home turf, he was totally dominating at both 800 and 1600 meters.

He’s refined middle distance running into a strategic event while turning it artistic at the same time. His running style is clearly poetry in motion.

Matter of fact, this talented, long gaited junior blew away the field in both District 3 races.

He was first to cross the 1600 meters in 4:27.84 in what turned out to be a very pedestrian time for him. He actually qualified for the event much faster at 4:12.94. This was a highly tactical race where no one wanted to take the lead for the first half of the race. He will get to test himself fully when he meets rival Drew White in the state Class 3 finals in Jefferson City in two weeks.

Where he really shined was 800 meters. “Coach told me to go and let it all out in that race.”

He complied. He was matched with Darien Freeman, junior from Jennings. Both qualified with outstanding times at 1:56.78 for Bartlesmeyer and 1:56.83 for the Jennings Warrior. Bartelsmeyer’s time was the new MICDS school record.

In another tactical mind splitting race, Bartelsmeyer went out early, kept Freeman on his shoulder, and when the dust settled, he had a record-smashing 1:54.79.

Bartelsmeyer is planning on running for one of the Ivy League schools upon graduation in a year. Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and the rest must be drooling for this talent. He’s got the smarts and the moxie and the Mojo to set all kinds of performance records in the Ivy League.

But first things first. Bartelsmeyer had to first rebound from an indoor season foot injury. He’s careful never to really overdo any one race.

This video interview pretty much reveals what the junior middle distance runner had on his mind, following his second convincing victory earned in the district championships Saturday at home.
