Four-Team Tuneup at Clayton's Gay Field

Greyhounds, Burroughs, Duchesne and DuBourg mix it up in Jamboree prior to start of season.

No one buys a car without first taking it for a spin. Friday night, four local football coaches took their collective teams out for a test drive prior to the start of the season this coming weekend.

Clayton's Greyhounds played gracious hosts to the Burroughs Bombers, Duchesne Pioneers and DuBourg Cavaliers. For 90 minutes, teams got to test their new plays under a broiling sun. Ninety two degree heat didn't offer any fall snap in the air.

The referees got a chance to work together, coaches found out more about their teams, players got to hit someone other than their own teammates and fans had a reason to come out on a hot night.

"We'll know more when we look at the films," said Burroughs first year coach Gus Frerotte, former NFL quarterback. His goal is finding a quarterback to replace graduated Sam Van Doren who threw for some 3,200 yards last year. Peter Schnuck, Davey Holmes and Jack Wood are in a three-way battle for the position. The only sure thing is Ezekiel Elliott, junior track star who will lug the leather this season. Burroughs hosts Kansas City Pembroke Hill Saturday, kickoff is 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, first-year coach Scott Weissman is looking for all kinds of possibilities with Clayton. "The only sure thing I know is that we face Mike (Russell) and a very good Lutheran North team Saturday (at Lutheran North at 1 p.m.).

Weissman was an assistant coach at Clayton last year, so he knows the returning personnel very well.
