Field is Set for Midwest Field Hockey Tournament Semifinals

MICDS, Cor Jesu, Lafayette and Nerinx all Reach Thursday's Final 4.

The field is set for the semifinals of the 2011 Midwest Field Hockey tournament.

Both Thursday games begin at 3:30 p.m. At John Burroughs, Cor Jesu (18-2) faces Nerinx Hall (19-7).

At MICDS, the host Rams (11-13) takes on Lafayette (19-1).

Here’s the results of the quarterfinals played at the AB Soccer Park in Fenton Tuesday afternoon.

MICDS stunned Villa Duchesne 2-1 in overtime. Burroughs lost in strokes 3-2 to Nerinx Hall. Cor Jesu beat Ursuline Academy 3-0 while Lafayette crushed Ladue 6-0.

MICDS over Villa Duchesne 2-1 in overtime

It wasn’t exactly David over Goliath, more it was like Danielle over Goldie. The girls of fall have fulfillled their fondest wishes inching towards the title game two years running. Last year, the Rams dropped the championship match to rival John Burroughs, 3-1.

The Rams have played exceedingly well in the second half of the season. “I told my girls to persevere. We’ve talked a lot about the Cardinals and how they never quit or gave up,” said coach Lynn Mittler.

The Rams had to brace for a strong Villa attack. Villa took 19 corner shots to 3 for the Rams. “We knew that was their strength and we practiced defending against that a lot,” said Mittler.

Villa had two early goals called back. One corner shot failed to hit the kick boards, and by the rules, that’s no goal. Another was nullified when the corner shot went outside the arc.

Sydney Tomaso scored the initial goal with an assist from Bentley Boldt to break a scoreless tie going into the second half. At the 19:08 mark, Ellie Condie landed a shot and the game was tied at 1-1, sending it to overtime.

Overtime was brief. Molly Scott scored on a shot past Mackenzie Sullivan with an assist by Condie to send the Rams into wild celebration.

Lancer goals were scored by Ashton Licvar, Monica Carron, Kelsey Clayman, Kate Barber, Danielle Biernacki and McKenzie Vick. The Lancers take on MICDS Thursday.

Nerinx Hall 3, Burroughs 2 in strokes.

Katherine Fox and Charlotte Martin scored in regulation, but not enough to get back to the title game they won last year. In strokes after two scoreless 10 minute overtimes, the Markers beat the Bombers on free shots, 4-2. Successful goals were notched by Abbie Marshall, Meghan Stuckel, Hayley Boken and Molly Trevethan. Only Gabrielle Calandrino's shot failed to score past keeper Liz Rill.

In the other early game, the Chargers of Cor Jesu reached the semifinal game with Nerinx with a 3-0 whitewash of Ursuline Academy. The Chargers, seeded No. 1 in the tournament are 18-2 this season.
