Elena Gresick's five goals helps Ladue Smother St. Joe 8-4

Lacrosse victory comes one year after season-ending loss to the Angels.

Put a stick into the hand of Elena Gresick and you have a talented athlete. She scored 25 points on 8 goals, 9 assists for the Ladue 18-7 field hockey team last fall.

Wednesday, she found the back of the net for the Rams’ lacrosse team 5 times as they beat host St. Joseph’s Academy 8-4 in a showdown game.

Last year, St. Joe edged the Rams 9-8, ending their 22-game win streak and hopes of a championship in 2011.

This year is different. While St. Joe is rebuilding with a bundle of freshmen and sophomores, Ladue features a veteran senior-dominated team.

Ladue scored the first five goals of the game, 3 from Gresick before Katie Karl of St. Joe scored at 8:26 of the first half, finally stopping the bleeding.

Gresick, who will play field hockey at Johns Hopkins University this fall was happy to get the win.

“We are playing strong as a team. We remain very calm under pressure. We lost to St. Joe last year, and we really wanted this one,” she said.

She tipped her cap to goal keeper Becca Langsam “who played one heckuva game.”

The Rams have a busy week. They host Kirkwood this Friday at Ladue Middle School.

Neil Theriault, who teaches physical education at Conway Elementary has taken over coaching duties for Ladue.

“We are really starting to click as a team,” he said. The Rams are a perfect 3-0 to start the season. “We are learning as a team and improving each game.”

“I think if we keep our heads into our games, we have a chance to go deep into the playoffs.”

For the game, Cam Newton, sophomore tennis player and midfielder turned in a very nice performance. She scored 2 goals and had 2 assists. Mimi Hemenway also had an assist for Ladue.

St. Joe got solo goals from Katie Karl, Jackie Karl, Mary Brightfield and Abbey Robinson. The Angels, playing hard until the end got Robinson’s goal with just 13 seconds left in regulation time.

The Angels coach Jen Bisch was undeterred by the loss. “We are young, and for our lack of experience, I thought our team played awesome.”

Last year, the Angels had 12 seniors, 9 of whom were starters.

“We will progress and improve, I’m sure of that,” said Bisch.
