Burroughs Student Recognized in National Community Program

Jimmy Lemkemeier, a 16-year-old sophomore at John Burroughs has been named  a semifinalist in the 2013 search for Build-A-Bear Workshop® Huggable Heroes®. Jimmy is among 80 young social entrepreneurs being recognized for helping make their community and the world a better place.

Lemkemeier founded Village in Need, a nonprofit organization that supplies goods to children in developing countries. He collected used sports team uniforms from local schools and shipped them to relief organizations in Ecuador, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Fiji, Haiti, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. To date, he has collected and delivered more than 3,000 items.
 
In addition to recognizing the Huggable Heroes, Build-A-Bear Workshop is committed to providing on-going training and mentoring by joining with the Jefferson Awards for Public Service, one of the nation’s top community service recognition programs.

Through the Jefferson Awards’ GLOBECHANGERS system, the newest generation of philanthropists will be equipped with the tools they need to build a lifetime of public service.

Nominations for this year’s Huggable Heroes program were accepted from January 18 through February 28. More than 1,000 applications were received. The nominations have now been narrowed down to a field of 80 semifinalists. In May, 30 finalists will be announced and the 10 Huggable Heroes will be named this summer.
