Burroughs Student Headed to Qatar for Spring Break Conference

Donald Soffer's video entered into international competition.

Donald Soffer, a sophomore at John Burroughs School, will spend his spring break in Doha, Qatar, where he will attend the THIMUN (Hague International Model United Nations) Qatar Northwestern Film Festival. Soffer’s film, Bottled Rationality, has been nominated for Best Story and Best Picture in the festival which serves as a platform for young people from all over the world to create advocacy films on local or global issues.

Soffer’s film — one of 23 films nominated in seven categories — looks into the issue of why Americans drink bottled water. “It was definitely a great experience putting together all of the interviews as well as doing my best to keep everyone's words in context,” says Soffer. “My main goal as a filmmaker is to present an objective perspective in an artful way, and I encourage anyone who views the movie to share their thoughts on whether I achieved that.”

This year’s festival will be held from March 29 to March 31 featuring three days of seminars, personal discussion with leading filmmakers and media personalities, numerous cultural activities and a gala awards evening. Nominees are awarded flight to and accommodations in Doha.
