Burroughs No Match For Westminster In Their Own Lair

Wildcats drop in nine three-pointers for 61-48 win over visiting Bombers.

The Westminster Christian Academy Wildcats will officially join the Metro League next year. Right now, the Cats have played many league members, usually enjoying victories. Friday, the Cats carved up visiting John Burroughs 61-48, gaining their 20th win of the season. Their record is a robust 20-4.

Burroughs coach Steve Wilcutt pronounced this a good home win for Westminster.

He gets no argument from host coach David Klyn. “This was a good tune up for the playoffs. We will be in a tough group,” said Klyn, referring to the host MICDS team, joined by University City, Clayton, and Priory.

Klyn said his star JohnEric Steiner had been under the weather most of the week, and other players stepped up. He handed bouquets to Chad Younger, Connor Fleming and Jack Dohr. Flemming topped all scorers with 16 points.

The Wildcats drained nine three pointers. They had more offensive rebounds than three pointers in the game. Three cats broke into double figures. Dohr had 13 and Steiner added 12.

“They beat us every which way,” said Wilcutt. “They just got too many offensive rebounds. We didn’t play a very good game,” said Wilcutt.

Westminster broke on top and led 5-0 before the Bombers could get untracked. The lead expanded to 17-10 by the end of the first quarter.

In the third quarter Steiner got the hot hand from three point land, building the lead to 13 points, 47-34.

The Bombers caught a few chances late in the game and Zeke Elliott broke free on spinning layup with the chance to cut the lead to under 10. But he traveled on the play, wiping out the opportunity.

By the end of the game, both teams swept their bench and filled the floor with reserves.

Amos Shinkle had a good game for the Bombers, dropping in 15 points. Elliott wound up with 12, James Carney, 10.

Westminster is now 20-4. Burroughs, with three league games left on the schedule fell to 15-4.
