Burroughs, MICDS, Ladue Put It All On the Line Monday

Quarterfinal games will determine fate of local teams.

On paper MICDS has more weapons on a football field than the Ladue Rams. But mind you, that’s just on paper.

When the Rams and the Rams tangled Oct. 15 at MICDS, the host team prevailed 56-55 in what some termed “the game of the century.”

It certainly was not for the feint of heart. MICDS took the oxygen out of the air, converting two drives for TDs in the space of 80 seconds. That included a successfully recovered onsides kick late in the game.

Monday, the clash of the Titans will occur on St. Louis U. High’s field, kickoff is 7 p.m. Get there early.

Ladue’s coach Mike Tarpey doesn’t need paper. He needs clearance from the team physician.

Deavin Edwards, star rusher severely injured his ankle with 30 seconds left until half of the last regular game with Clayton. Edwards should be good to go Monday night.

Ladue (8-3) vs MICDS (11-0) at SLUH, 7 p.m.

Edwards has rushed 133 times for 1,579 yards and 23 TDS. He had 386 of those and six TDs in the MICDS showdown. But, he’s pretty much the entire Ladue ground attack.

The Rams can strike through the air. Brandon Carr, senior quarterback finally took the reins after watching Mizzou’s Kortland Webb wax his magic on the ground and in the air for two years. Carr has put his stamp on the 2011 version.

Carr has completed 117 passes on 230 attempts (51 percent) for1,707 yards and 16 TDs. His favorite target is Jehu Chesson, big time college bound with46 receptions and 680 yards and 5 TDs.

Chesson likes Northwestern, Illinois and Michigan. Many schools are making offers.

Ring leaders defensively are backs Daylen Dean (46 tackles, 62 points) Adehkeem Brown, 62 points and linebacker Michael Horton-Loftin with 66 points. D-backs Chesson and Hamm Hooper have opposing pass attacks nicely under control.

In a way, MICDS is the “Dream Team” of this campaign. Just 5-5 a year ago, the 23 seniors on the team boost an 11-0 record.

It all started August 26 when they took down Maplewood 36-35 in overtime.

Two stars of stars stand out. Senior QB Thomas Militello, mulling through Ivy League offers (Brown, Columbia and others) has hit on 157 of 229 passes (69 percent) for 2,425 yards, 35 TDs and just 6 interceptions.

Michael Scherer, who has agreed to play for Mizzou has rushed for 968 yards and 16 TDs on the ground. He’s hard to bring down with arm tackles or even several defenders hanging on.

The running game is clearly a three-way attack. A,J.Washington has 688 yards and 16 TDs while Denzell Conway has another 296 on the ground. All are solid receivers.

Passing results are spread around.

Jack Howell, who will play collegiately has 44 receptions for 819 yards and 15TDs. The ball goes also to fiesty Foster Bundy (36 receptions, 735 yards and 12TDs. William Morehead has latched onto 289 yards worth of catches.

Defensive stars are many. Center-linebacker Chris Hiemenz comes to hit hard. The Rams get good support from Clark Rogers, Joe Goley, Cole Sigmund, Chris Catsavis and rushing tackler Todd Hearnes.

Scherer, from his middle linebacker spot leads defenders with 51 tackles, 18 asssists for 69 points.

It’s a darn shame either of these two great teams has to lose Monday night.

Burroughs (10-1) versus Lutheran North (9-2) at Clayton’s Gay Field, 7 p.m.

The Bombers, who reached the Class 3 Show Me Bowl title game have completely rebuilt under the guidance of new coach Gus Frerotte and new quarterback Davey Holmes.

The only beat down came early, Sept. 10 when MICDS picked them apart, 45-20. Its been nothing but smooth sailing since then.

This is a rematch with Metro League rival Lutheran North. The Bombers toppled the Crusaders easily 53-16.

Holmes can really air it out. He's connected on 99 of 152 throws (65 percent for 1,505 yards and 21 TDs.

Ezekiel Elliott, track star has rushed for 1,327 yards and 25 TDs (30 total).
