Burroughs Makes Sweet Music in Girls' Lacrosse

Bombers trample visiting Webster Groves 13-0 with an 11-goal first half performance.

The John Burroughs girls lacrosse team has all the components of a fine symphony orchestra in perfect sync.

And that doesn’t go unnoticed, because right over their shoulders is the construction of a brand new, multi million dollar fine arts center rising on their campus.

The impresarios have all the elements in place. Defense knows its role; the Bombers have solid goal keeping and they have several attackers who can score with ease.

Wednesday, all the pieces fell into place with the Bombers pitching a rare shutout, 13-0 over visiting Webster Groves. The Bombers got their 10th goal with 3:10 remaining in the first half, forcing most of the starters to the bench and a clock shortened second-half.

The Bombers needed that. After jumping out to the first nine wins of the season; they hit a speed bump, losing twice in Tennessee, and 11-10 to giant Lafayette.

Meghan DiGiulio has one of the major contending teams when the area playoffs begin soon.

Senior Leanne Hurster and freshman Barrett Carlson are scoring machines.

Hurster, headed to the University of Denver got 4 goals in the early going; Carlson bolstered her total with 3. Hurster leads the team scoring with 39 goals and 54 points. Abby Frerotte, the keeper on the field hockey team recorded the shutout.

Her counterpart, Kathy Perkins of Webster was riddled with 11 goals in the first half, but stood tall in the second, allowing only 2 shots to get by her.

“Our team is playing very well. We had a great weekend in Memphis. We just played some really tough teams,” said DiGiulio.

“The team we played Saturday morning (in Memphis) said they hadn’t lost an instate game in three years.”

DiGiulio will miss her keeper, Frerotte. “She’s just a wall back there. And she’s such a good communicator too.”

Frerotte took the win in stride. “I love playing that position, any sport.” She will continue her career at Haverford College in Philadelphia.

“We’ve been doing very well. We lost a lot of big seniors this year and all the new girls are really doing well and getting into the flow of things,” said Frerotte.

Hurster really likes the team’s tough schedule. “We approach every game with the same attitude. We like to go and play really good teams and we like to show them what we’ve got. We have a lot of depth and talent and work really well together,” said Hurster.

Webster coach Andrew Hittler knows there will be another day.

“Burroughs is really a heckuva team. They really are. As long as my girls work hard every day, that’s all I can ask for. With our freshmen, and lots of sophomores, we’ll be good in a few years,” he said.
