Burroughs Field Hockey Takes On a New Look Without Graduated Charlotte Martin

Star Charlotte Martin has departed John Burroughs for Northwestern and the Bombers will rely heavily on solid team play this year. “That’s what the season is all about, us coming together as one,” said veteran coach Meridith Thorpe.

Last season, the versatile Martin led the team in scoring with 16, goals, 11 assists for 43 points and 7 game winning goals.

“We will be solid, but we won’t have any super stars,” said Thorpe. “We will rely on each other to win games this fall,” she said. The Bombers won plenty last year. They were 14-5.

The Bombers graduated six seniors and look to Katherine Fox, midfielder; Abby Martone (midfielder/forward); Emily Goodloe (defender) and Claire Sweetman, forward, all seniors.

Thorpe will know more about her team once tournament play begins.The Gateway Classic is a true test for all teams in the early going and a good way to kick off the season.

“We like that tournament. It is a nice mix of strong St. Louis area teams and out of town teams,” said Thorpe. “That way we will find out where we are strong, and in what areas we need to improve.
