Burroughs Field Hockey Scores Twice in the Span of 23 Seconds

Bombers run record to 11-2 with 3-1 win over visiting Ursuline Academy Bears.

It was a beautiful autumnal cloud free day in Ladue. Burroughs and Ursuline Academy were battling it out in field hockey. It just seems on this sky blue day, out of nowhere, a bolt of lightening  struck from the sky.

In the matter of 23 seconds, Burroughs drove the ball past Ursuline goalkeeper Eby Ness twice, breaking open a 1-0 lead for a 3-0 score, and the 11-2 Bombers were never headed.

“It just seems like we played a lot better in the second second half,” said Ursuline’s coach Roxanne Naeger.

The home team Bombers had the game pretty much in control after a slow start by both teams.

At the 18 minute mark, junior Katherine Fox slammed the ball past Ness with an assist by Maddie Hicks for a 1-0 lead.

Then the 23-second score-a-thon began. First with 5:58 left in the first half, Claire Sweetman, another junior scored with the assist from senior star Charlotte Martin. Twenty three seconds later, Collean Trotter dropped in a bleeder with the assist from Sweetman this time. The Bombers never scored again in the game.

Martin, the most experienced player in blue and yellow and already committed to Northwestern has been switched to midfield. A year ago, she scored 90 goals from her forward position. In the midfield, she adds experience to defense and offense, she is feeding younger players, creating lots of scoring opportunities.

In the second half, the Bears woke from their slumber and senior Anna Maggiorotto scored on a drive from point blank range. In the first half, Liz Rill minded the nets, and in the second half it was Abbie Frerotte in net.

When Rahny Longley of Burroughs took a stick to the face, Bears attacker Maddie Friedmann had to sit and they played short-handed for five minutes and never recovered.

This is an important time of the year. Still, Burroughs coach Meridith Thorpe is staying in the moment and not looking too far ahead. She enjoys playing the stiff competition. “I’d rather play the best teams than a bunch of cup cakes,” she said.

Naeger was resolute in defeat. She believes her Bears still know how to finish their scoring opportunities. After all, her team had just dropped a game to the top rated team in the area.
