Burroughs Falls 1-Nil in Own Tourney: Trinity Will Take It

Gubicya sisters combined for the only goal of the game contested in the light rain.

Burroughs and Trinity Catholic were locked in a soccer game in a light rain Saturday that could have gone either way.

At the 70:50 mark of the game on the artificial turf at Burroughs, the Gubicya sisters of Trinity made the win happen.

Older sister Julia took a perfectly centered corner kick from Sam Coleman, headed it to her younger sister Melanie, a freshman who flicked it in past a startled Evie Ogelsby, freshman keeper for Burroughs for the initial goal and the game-winner.

“That was probably one of our only corner kick goals of the season to be honest with you.” said 45-year coaching veteran Vince Drake.

“It was set up that way, and we did it on the fly. It was a semi-designed play from scratch. It went in and it was good enough for a win,”  he said.

By Drake’s evaluation, neither team threatened the other all that much the entire game. Goalies were rarely tested.

“We controlled most of the game. Burroughs is a good side. We are playing better now that we are getting more experience. Hopefully, we will be ready for the districts. Trinity, with the win is 7-8-0. Burroughs slipped to 5-6-0.

Good thing the young Gubicya sister scored. This was a friendly game in a tournament, and should it have ended 0-0, there would have been no overtime.

It was a dark, dank grey day as St. Pius X and Barat Academy took the field in then nightcap for the last game of this year’s Ray Beckman Round Robin Tournament.

Burroughs had a few chances. Senior Sydney O’Neal launched a solid second-half shot, but it ended wide left of the Trinity nets.

To some degree, the Bombers are fighting the numbers. With the popularity of lacrosse on campus, the girls are having to chose their spring sport. They could go for lacrosse, soccer or track and field.

“We’re very happy with the ones we have. We have a lot of camaraderie on this team,” claimed Bombers’ coach Alan Trezcki.

“Both teams were evenly matched. I don’t think either team necessarily played their best match. Judging by the other games played in the tournament, both coaches would have appreciated a little more possession time,” he said.

Usually, a one goal game doesn’t hold up in a game like this.

“As the game went on and as it got later and later, and not many chances were being created by either side, I figured that the first goal might be the one to win it,” said the Burroughs coach.

“Right now, mainly, we are trying to get our team ready for district competition,” said Trezcki.
