Abigail Grimes' Solo Goal Ends MICDS' Soccer Season

Vivettes win 1-0 to capture Class 2, District 5 Title.

The Mary Institute Country Day soccer team played 184 minutes between Monday and Wednesday and score 1 goal. The goal Monday against Villa Duchense well into the second sudden-death overtime propelled them to a win over Villa Duchesne and a match with Visitation Academy in the championships Wednesday at Westminster Christian Academy.

Junior Abby Grimes solo goal at the 49:08 minute mark of the second half was the only score in the game. The Vivettes made it hold up for the Class 2, District 5 title.

Now, the V’s go on to play the winner of Trinity-St. Charles in the regional round.

First things first. Both goalkeepers, Campbell Torchin, senior from MICDS and freshman Grace Forthaus played brilliantly.

A collision in the second half almost took Forthaus apart. “As goalies, we’ve always been told to break the legs of defenders,” she said in jest.

“I do have a cleat mark in my leg to show it (the collision) she said. She stopped Rams attackers a number of times.

Grimes shot was the only shot to find net. She worked the ball fairly close, and let go with a ripple that went high and wide of Torchin. “I just cut around the defender and took the shot. Its hard to beat Torchin, she’s a very good goalie,” said Grimes.

For the 5 MICDS seniors, their careers are over. Time to launder the uniforms and turn them in.

“I have to give our seniors a lot of credit for sticking it out with us,” said coach Michael Black. “We have come a very long way in four years,” he said.

Jade Klump, junior who leads Visitation in scoring knew what it would take to win. “They are a great team. We knew we’d have to come out and play hard to win.”

The two teams met early in the season, with Viz winning 3-0. It was 1-0 at half of that game.

Black didn’t want to offer any excuses for his weary team. But that double overtime game Monday took its toll. The Rams looked fairly tired by the second half of the championship match.

“We had to play harder Monday than Viz did to win Monday. And we certainly had to play longer.”

MICDS finished with a 17-8-0 record; Viz moves in with a 16-6-0 mark.
