17 Fourth Quarter Points Propels MICDS Into Quarterfinals at Home Against Borgia

Two TDs from A.J. Washington and a safety gives MICDS a 12-0 record and a step closer to the Show Me Bowl.

Against Ladue, the MICDS football team likes to save the best for the last.

Senior captain A.J. Washington ran two TDs up the middle for 16 and 18 yards in the last quarter at St. Louis U. High, and the Red Rams staged their second heart stopping come-from-behind victory over the Ladue Rams this season.

This one really counted. A 31-21 victory propelled MICDS into a home game quarterfinal match against St. Francis Borgia of Washington in the state tournament this Saturday.

Early in the fourth quarter, the MICDS ground game came to a screeching half, forcing those Rams into a fourth and nine situation. Senior star Michael Scherer pooch punted the ball out of the Wildcat formation and when the bill came to rest on the three inch line, Ladue was in serious trouble.

Trailing 21-14 in the third quarter on another series, MICDS forced quarterback Brandon Carr into a safety on a high snap, cutting into the lead, 21-16.

This is where Washington scored the first of his two final TDs in the last quarter of the game.

From the early going, it looked like MICDS was the team who came to win. Michael Scherer galloped seven yards on an option pitch from Thomas Militello and at 9:20 the Rams went up 7-0.

Deavin Edwards who ran for six TDs and 386 yards in the 56-55 district loss to MICDS was unable to play because of a bad ankle, and Michael Horton-Loftin scored on a 28-yard run in substitute role.  Eric Stuber’s point after tied the game at seven.

Scherer ran 18 yards for his second TD, but sensational receiver Jehu Chesson hung on to a 20 yard reception and the game was knotted at 14-all at the intermission.

From there, the injured Edwards left the game and never re-appeared. Daylen Dean, his sub capped a 93-yard third-quarter drive scoring on a seven yard scamper and a 21-14 Ladue lead.

That set up the final quarter where MICDS outscored Ladue 17-0. Mixed in on Washington’s second TD was a nifty two point conversion from receiver Foster Bundy to quarterback Militello, all alone in the corner of the end zone.

In the game, Scherer rushed for 97 yards on 16 caries. Washington rushed 9 times for 49 yards. Militello connected on 13 of 20 passes for 184 yards and now has 37 TDs through the air this unbeaten season. Jack Howell had 4 receptions for 35 yards and Foster Bundy had 6 receptions for 78 yards.

For Ladue, Shawn Whitley rushed for 45 yards, Horton-Loftin 43 yards and Dean 38.
