Deck the Halls for the Holidays

Butler’s Pantry’s Director of Visual Design Brian Blasingame Offers Holiday Décor Tips

Amidst the bare branches of winter and stark white blankets of snow, the holiday season is ideally suited to embellishing one’s home with festive décor and welcoming touches. Whether it is to delight your children or create a warm and jovial environment for holiday guests, decorating your home can be both simple & fun to do.

  • Many people today already have planters or pots at their front doors that hold plants during the spring and summer.  Try dressing the plants in them with simple touches like adding a bow to the tops of potted evergreen trees, adding ornaments to them or lining the bases with staked pinecones. Evergreen plants will easily endure the harsh weather during the winter season and a little bit of trim will create a strong effect. Sconces that flank a front door can be quickly transformed by tying fresh evergreen and pinecones to hang below them.
  • For a more elaborate treatment, hang cone-shaped baskets filled with evergreen and ornaments from the overhang of your front porch or portico. They will look lovely blowing softly in the wind.
  • Whether outside or indoors, instead of just hanging garland along a staircase railing try tying large ponderosa pinecones at each gathering point. The oversized pinecones are a natural embellishment to the season and the scale works perfectly. A grand staircase looks opulent and regal when lined on each step with a potted, blooming poinsettia plant. Pinecones clustered together in big, low baskets look like kindling that would be too pretty to use when placed on both sides of a fireplace.
  • Instead of just laying garland on a fireplace mantle take it a step further and frame the artwork hung above with the garland as well. Garland hanging over the edge of the mantle too will further the opulence and richness the treatment will achieve.
  • An unexpected yet delightful trick to transform the glow within a room is to line the panes of glass with softly toned transparency film or paper. Readily available at office supply companies, rose toned hues of this removable paper will give your dining room a warm and unexpected glow that will delight your dinner guests and achieve an old world feel for a festive dinner party during the holidays.
  • For a holiday cocktail party, instead of creating multiple, small arrangements make one large showpiece to sit in the center of the room. Tall, soaring white branches in a footed urn encircled at the base with white hydrangea, roses, evergreen and flocked pinecones affords an impactful scale that smaller pieces never will. Green, white and brown is the perfect color combination for a mid-winter soiree.
  •             With just a few extra enhancements like these one can warmly adorn and trim one’s home and ensure treating each guest to your own individual style of holiday cheer.
