New Electronic Road Signs

MoDOT gives boost to Ladue, Frontenac Drivers on Lindbergh.

Starting today (Dec. 22), drivers in Ladue and Frontenac will have the benefit of message boards along Lindbergh Boulevard (route 67) warning them of sudden changes to nearby highway conditions.

"The dynamic message signs are similar to the ones already available on the interstates, just a little smaller," said MoDOT assistant St. Louis district engineer Tom Blair. "The locations were strategically chosen to provide drivers information before reaching the major interstates," said Blair.

Frontenac's location is southbound on Lindbergh, just north of Kreis' Restaurant (on the drivers' right hand side) and northbound on Ladue just north of Clermont Lane (also on the drivers right side).

MoDOT has 23 new dynamic signs at locations throughout St. Louis County.

"We are trying to help drivers make smart-last minute decisions when approaching the interstates," said Linda Wilson, community relations coordinator for MoDOT. "Our engineers refer to these as pivots so drivers can find other routes if there are accidents or backups on the major highways," said Wilson.

By mid-January, drivers will see travel times on the new message boards, similar to what is in place along I-270.

All together, MoDOT now has 295 cameras, 123 message signs, sensor coverage on 225 center-line miles of freeway and sensor coverage on 57 miles of arterials for monitoring and communicating road conditions.

Also, the signs will be used for SARA alerts, notifying drivers of child abductions in conjunction with the Missouri Highway Patrol.

"With predictions of ice and snow Thursday and Friday, we may just need these signs right away," said Wilson.
