Bridge Expected to Re-Open September 1

Ladue Residents Need to Seek Alternative Way to Cross Delmar into University City.

The bridge over Interstate 170 at Delmar Blvd. has been closed since April 25 and will be demolished May 20. Ladue drivers going from University City to Ladue or in the opposite direction will need to find an alternative route until a new span is completed September 1.

The bridge was scheduled for replacement, but closed early when structural defects were found and chunks of the underside were falling onto the interstate.

Ramps going to I-170 in both directions are still open to drivers.

"We are working with our construction on several issues," said Karen Yeomans, West St. Louis County Engineer. "For instance, (we are) adjusting the existing schedule to ensure roadways stay open during holidays, coordinating with other projects in the region so that we are not impacting alternate routes and determining if material production, such as casting girders can be accelerated."

For now, drivers can cross I-170 at Ladue Road or Old Bonhomme Road.

The construction start was moved up two weeks because of the discovery of serious structural damage. The early closure will give utility companies ample time to relocate the lines on the bridge and give the contractor time to get the necessary materials on hand to start construction ahead of schedule or on time.

MoDOT officials are working with the construction company closely, hoping to open the bridge ahead of its scheduled date.

Orange directional signs are strategically placed in Olivette and Ladue, assisting drivers to find detour routes around the closed bridge.
