Woman Tries to Pass Counterfeit Money at McNamara's BP Service Station
Ladue police are investigating. How much counterfeit money is in circulation?
You've never passed a counterfeit bill, but others have—but maybe not as often as you'd think, according to a 2010 study from the Federal Reserve.
It did happen last week, however, at the McNamara BP service station at the corner of Conway and Lindbergh.
According to a report from the Ladue Police Department, a 24-year-old woman tried to pass two counterfeit bills at the gas station.

The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. last Thursday. Police said they are investigating.
That, of course, is why so many retailers use special pens designed to flag fake money. According to a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago three years ago, the value of counterfeit currency circulating in the country ranges from $60 million to $80 million.

"Less than $1 for every $10,000 outstanding," the study's authors wrote. The total, they said, "is highly unlikely to exceed $220 million, or less than $3 for every $10,000 in circulation."
