Police Cracking Down on Illegal Fireworks, Drunk Driving and Curfew

Fireworks and DWI violations will be the primary focus of St. Louis County police this Fourth of July holiday season. It's illegal to possess, use or sell fireworks within the county.

St. Louis County police are warning residents that shooting off fireworks within St. Louis County is illegal and officers will take offenses seriously.

Police say the Fourth of July holiday crack-down is in the name of safety and provided the following details of the enforcement in a news release.

An accident-free 4th of July holiday period for residents and visitors is the goal of a special holiday enforcement program of the St. Louis County Police. Fireworks violations will be the primary focus of patrol officers because of the preventable injuries that result every year from the illegal use of explosive devices.

Summonses will be issued to anyone in possession of, using, or selling fireworks in St. Louis County.

County Police will also be checking motorists in an effort to reduce the number of drunk drivers on our streets and highways.

The term “fireworks” in the County ordinance covers all combustibles or explosives, including sparklers and “magic snakes.” Fines for the violations range from $50 to $1,000. 

Officers responding to the sights and sounds of fireworks discharges will seize remaining unexploded devices, as well as issue summonses.

Strict enforcement of traffic safety laws is a key element of the holiday enforcement program. Patrol officers will also be alert for curfew ordinance and liquor law violations which often contribute to accidents. 

The Highway Safety Unit will be providing patrol on the interstate highways within St. Louis County during the holiday and holiday weekend.
