77-Year-Old Man Arrested in Ladue For Shoplifting

How common is shoplifting by older folks?

How often are elderly people busted for shoplifting? It's not as rare as you might think, and it happened last week at the Schnucks in Ladue.

The Ladue Police Department reported that they arrested a 77-year-old man for shoplifting at about 1:14 p.m. on April 17. The address, 8867 Ladue Road, is the address for the Schnucks supermarket in Ladue.

Just this week, police in Arizona arrested a 61-year-old man and his 89-year-old mother who they say committed 32 separate thefts over a five-day period.

Statistics about who shoplifts are hard to come by. An old study from the National Institutes of Health noted a decade-long rise in the rates of shoplifting among the elderly (but we couldn't get our hands on the details behind that late-1980s study).

Numerous sources say shoplifting is only somewhat more common among younger people, but that the crime spans all genders, age groups and ethnicities.
