As the end of summer draws near, the list of items to complete before school starts to get longer. For those who attend private schools, parents may not have to search for the perfect back-to-school outfits, but are purchasing new uniforms. When preparing for your uniform shopping, here are the sought-after locations for uniforms and accessories.
Roberts Fine Apparel
Roberts, a well known Ladue fine clothier for boys and men, has been around since 1947. In addition to formal and casual clothing, it offers a one-stop shop for boy’s uniforms. When it comes to getting the right size uniform, Rita Toscano, manager of Roberts said: “I watch the line very closely. If we are out of a size, it takes about three days from the day I order to receive it.”
In addition to personal service, Roberts also offers on-site alterations in late September for pants. If you are not sure what your child’s uniform requirements are, “I know all of the participating schools and what they wear, making it a very easy and painless process,” Toscano said.
Roberts summer hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday- Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. The store will reopen on Sundays after September 18 from noon-4 p.m.
Just Me Apparel
Just Me Apparel, located at 232 Sulpher Spring Rd. in Ballwin (also affiliated with Fisher uniforms) provides uniforms for most area parochial schools. Just Me Apparel offers uniforms, accessories, monogramming services and the option of online shopping.
“The advantage in school fittings is that you do not have to make a special trip to the Ballwin location, and you are guaranteed to receive your uniform before school starts,” owner Donna Waldman said. “If parents wait to order uniforms before school starts, there could be a back log of 10-12 weeks” and are urged not to wait until right before school starts.
Waldman said, “We also offer the unique feature of picking up your uniforms from any local Laurie’s Shoes store or at your school.” This option saves time and helps customers avoid the crowds. Check the website for store hours as they vary.
Laurie’s Shoes provides quality footwear for children and adults. “We provide in-school shoe fittings for new and returning students as well as $5 off coupons (provided via the school) for purchases over $49 or more,” Joe Richardson, manager of the Glendale location, said. Laurie's has four locations.
“If we do not have your size, we usually can transfer it from another store and have it within three days,” Richardson said. Check the Laurie’s Shoes website for hours as they vary for each location.
If you are trying to cut costs try places such as Costco where I recently found leggings that go under girls' uniforms. Target is another hotspot for uniform items. It offers girls' and boys' polo shirts as low as $5.58 per shirt. It also has a large variety of pants, shirts, sweaters and socks to get your school year off to the right start.
Old Navy, located in Ladue Crossing, offers a variety of uniform items from shirts to pants and sweaters. As always, all of these cost-saving stores provide online shopping, and you may qualify for free shipping.
Many schools offer uniform recycling events, which allow parents to purchased gently used uniforms at a fraction of the cost of new ones. Ask your school if they sponsor an event, and be sure to get there early to see if the sizes you need are there.
The overriding advice from all of the uniform and shoe suppliers is to not wait until the beginning of August to make your purchases. Enjoy the rest of the summer with your children, and mark one more thing off of your long list of items to do before school starts.
