Frederick Lee Hawes, Country Day Graduate, Dead at Age 85

Built a successful plastics company and sold out to Nike, Inc.

Frederick Lee Hawes, age 85 passed away on September 10, 2012. Mr. Hawes is survived by his wife of 61-years Florence Sissy Weld Hawes.

Mr. Hawes attended St. Louis Country Day School and is a graduate of Princeton University. He joined the United States Navy at the end of World War II.

He majored in Economics and started a career in the plastics industry.  He started Terra Plastics and built it into a powerhouse company, selling to Nike, Inc. He was a major fundraiser at his children’s schools, Villa Duchesne and St. Louis Priory.

After his retirement he traveled often to Ampleforth, England to work with the Abbott to bring modern business practices to the monastic community. Mr. Hawes loved hiking and mountain climbing and reached the the summit of Mount Ranier in the state of Washington.

Mr. Hawes was a resident at the Gatesworth retirement community at the time of his death. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Annunziata in Ladue, 9305 Clayton Road on Friday, September 14 at 11 a.m. Burial will be a private internment. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes to Washington University Medical School will be appreciated. He is survived by Elizabeth Brown (Dennis), Marion Hawes, Noel Mangano (James), and Frederick Hawes Jr., and numerous grandchildren.
