Behind the Headlines of the Middle East

Noted BYU professor to offer free lecture in Frontenac on Oct. 11

The author of numerous articles and several books on the topics of Islam and Mormonism will present “Behind the Headlines of the Middle East,” a free lecture open to the public, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.

Sponsored by the St. Louis Chapter of BYU Alumni, Daniel C. Peterson, Brigham Young University professor of Islamic Studies and Arabic, will speak at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 10445 Clayton Rd. in Frontenac, just west of Lindbergh Blvd.

Peterson will speak about his academic work of translating, producing and publishing medieval books from the Golden Age of Islamic History and thought (8th-12th century) from Arabic and Farsi to English.

“Similar lectures by (Peterson) in other parts of the country have shed light on what Islam is really about, which is quite different from what we read in the headlines here in the west,” said Natalie Giddens, chair of the St. Louis BYU Alumni board. “It is a fascinating part of the world, rich with history and tradition, and this is a great chance for bettering our education and understanding of the Middle East.”

Because of the work Peterson has done over his career, Muslims now have access to a wealth of literature covering topics such as medicine, astronomy, philosophy, metaphysics, art, poetry and their own religious commentaries.
