Summer Nutrition and Weight Loss

Why diets do not work.

With spring break and prom season behind us and  graduations upon us, most people are starting to realize that summer is almost here.  To get ready for summer many start to think about increasing their exercise program or starting a new diet.  Please be kind to yourself and your body this year and promise yourself that you will not diet.  Diets can lead to deprivation.  Why?

Diets do not work.  95 percent of all dieters gain their relost weight and more.  When you diet your body is forced into starvation mode.  The body then has to slow down to conserve energy.  Your metabolism is slowed to keep the bodies essential functions going.

Instead, this summer adopt an all around healthy lifestyle.  Learn to recognize what being physically hungry and satisified feels like for you versus eating because you are bored, stressed, or tired.  Try using a Rating of Perceived Hunger and Satiety Scale.  Use 0 to signal extreme hunger and 10 to signal extreme fullness.  Targets on the scale for hunger should be about a 3 and for satisfied about a 7.  If we get to 0 that usually results in consuming too much food too quickly, particulary because it takes the body 20 minutes to recognize it is full.

Becoming internally connected versus externally connected to your hunger and satiety will last you the rest of your life.  Whereas a diet is for the short-term.  As I always advise clients, if you can only eat this way for a short time then the results you gain will not be maintainable.
