Portion Distortion............  Not just a cute play on words.  It is the reality of our food world on the go, at restaurants or home. 

Food on the go and the quick grab options can always pose problems from a healthy nutrient balance stand point.  But portions cause the most problems.  Watch out for the individual portions of snack foods.  If you check the label there are usually two servings in the one individual sized package.

Restaurant portions are in general larger than what we consume at home.  Something as simple as a half sandwich has lost meaning.  Many of the places that serve half soup or salad with a half sandwich actually serve a full sandwich.  We do not stop to think twice about the portion because the menu says half.

Now at home you would think that we would have a better handle on our portions.  However, over the years the plates themselves have increased in size.  This offers more space to pile food on your plate.  Try eating a meal on your salad plates to better control your portions.

Quick and easy way to help you keep your portions in check...........  your fist is about 1 cup, your palm about serving of protein and the tip of your thumb about 1 Tablespoon.  Yes everyone's hand is a different size but everyone should not be eating the same amount.
