Wanted: Accountant, Product Support Engineer, IT Infrastructure Engineer and More

Here's your weekly roundup of who's hiring in Ladue, Frontenac and nearby.

The job market took a hit several years ago with the recession, but employers may be starting to hire again.

"My perspective on the employment picture in Frontenac is very good," Bob Shelton, city administrator of Frontenac, said. "With the solid mix [listed below] our employment sectors are very versatile and strong. Health, hospitality, education, financial and retail. Our building department is seeing an influx of residential and commercial building permits both for renovations and new construction. Notable new commercial construction projects include Bricktops and Panera; Saks is undergoing remodeling."

Shelton said that Frontenac's largest employer is Shriner’s Hospital with 287 employees. The Hilton St. Louis Frontenac employees 200.

"The large retailers such as Saks and Nieman are also in the range of 200 employees. Education such as Oak Hill/Villa Duchene and St. Joseph’s Academy are in the 100 employee range and the financial segment including Wachovia at 125 and Reliance Bank at 86 employees are also significant," Shelton continued.

Ladue, according to Michael Wooldridge, city clerk/assistant to the mayor, doesn't track the unemployment rate. Simply Hired, an online employment search site, lists Ladue’s unemployment rate at 2.6 percent compared to the national average of 5.8 percent. It also notes that jobs in Ladue have decreased by 70 percent since November 2009.

"I don’t see employment growing a whole lot if it grows at all," Wooldridge said. "If we get a few businesses in that fill in the vacant spaces then obviously it will go up. A few businesses have opened up and replaced ones that have closed; we still have a few that need to be filled but that will happen over time."

Wooldridge said that the largest employers in Ladue are the two Schnucks stores and Ladue School District.

A mixed bag for the region

But, the overall unemployment rate in the St. Louis area recently increased. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on June 29 that unemployment in St. Louis inched-up in May. The newspaper indicated 2,900 jobs were cut in the month, expanding the St. Louis jobless rate 8.6 percent.

Thousands of St. Louis County residents continue to rely on government help. According to the Missouri Department of Labor & Industrial Relations, 9,960 county residents received unemployment benefits as of May 2011. More than 4,000 workers from St. Louis City received benefits at the same time.

Jefferson City hasn’t ignored the issue. Missouri Watchdog reported in April that Governor Jay Nixon signed a bill extending unemployment benefits. State Sen. Jim Lembke of St. Louis County said the bill was wasteful spending, the news site reported.
