Ten Summer Travel Tips for Seniors

Your golden years are among the best times in your life to travel. With more leisure time, you can feel free to explore new destinations. And, summer is the perfect season to get out and go. The weather is nice, so why not visit the grandkids or take the “bucket list” trip of your dreams. Here are a few tips for seniors to remember when traveling this summer:

1.      Before you leave, visit your doctor for a check-up. Use the opportunity to talk to your doctor about special vaccinations you might need. Be sure to tell your doctor if you’re traveling internationally. If you have a pre-existing condition, have your doctor write your medical history and treatment instructions in case you need to visit a hospital in a foreign country.

3.      If driving or flying for long distances, be sure to take plenty of breaks and get out and walk around.

4.      Stay hydrated to avoid heat stroke and dehydration.

5.      Carry extra prescriptions with you. If flying, be sure to put all prescription medications in their original containers, in a carry-on so it’s with you at all times. Insulin needles require a doctor’s note.

6.      Make sure that hotel accommodations are senior-accessible.

7.      Always carry identification and medical information with you. This should be tucked in a safe place such as your wallet or a fanny pack.

8.      Wear proper attire and remember your sunblock! Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses.

9.      Inform people you are leaving and check in with them regularly while on vacation. If you miss a regularly scheduled check-in, the person will know that there is a potential problem.

10.  Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer to guard against germs!
