Spring Has Sprung!

MediNurse Explores Affordable Vehicle Modification Devices to Assist Seniors this Spring.

MediNurse, St. Louis’ premier healthcare provider for private duty and corporate wellness programs, wants seniors to feel confident and safe when operating their vehicles.

It’s typical for driving abilities to change with age. Common problems seniors can face while driving include coping with arthritis, mobility issues, height complications, and difficulty with seatbelts. MediNurse explored vehicle additions that may help aid in a safe and enjoyable driving experience this spring.

 For seniors with arthritis, consider:

·Key turner: This is a small plastic handle that attaches to car keys and provides additional leverage to turn the key in the ignition.

·Gas cap remover: This device works like a wrench, aiding in loosening and tightening the gas cap.

·Steering wheel cover: This fits over a steering wheel, making it easier to grip.

If an individual struggles with range of motion causing entry and exit of the vehicle to be a struggle, consider:

·Standers Metro Car Handle: This is a small support handle that inserts into the door frame and assists with entry and exit from the vehicle.

·CarCaddie: This is a strap handle that hooks around the top of the car door, assisting with entry and exit from the vehicle.

·Swivel seat cushion: This circular portable cushion turns 360 degrees to help rotate the body in and out of the vehicle.

Men and women can lose about half an inch in height each decade after age 30. Seniors in need of a boost to see over the steering wheel or to reach the vehicle’s pedals might consider:

·Wedge seat cushion: This is an orthopedic cushion that supports the back and raises the body up to three inches.

·Pedal extensions: These block-like additions to the top of the pedals make it easier to reach the gas and the brakes.

For those who struggle to reach the seatbelt and find it uncomfortable to wear, consider:

·Easy Reach Seatbelt Handle: This is a rubber extension handle that attaches to the seatbelt strap, making it easier to reach for those struggling with mobility.

·Seatbelt shoulder pad: This fits on the shoulder strap of the seatbelt and protects the neck and shoulder from uncomfortable rubbing that may occur.

These vehicle modification devices may help seniors have a more comfortable driving experience. For serious health concerns such as vision impairment, consult a physician and the Missouri Department of Revenue to discuss limitations in operating a vehicle safely.
