Preventing Falls for Older Americans

One out of three people age 65 and older fall each year, and the odds rise to 70 percent and higher for the oldest age groups, according to the American Geriatrics Society. Falls are a serious epidemic problem, as over 13 million seniors fall every year.

The preventive steps are easier than you might think for seniors, their families, and their physicians to put into place.

·         Visual impairment: Aging is often associated with cataracts, glaucoma and other conditions that might lead to a risk of falling. Have your eyes checked and make sure your doctor is aware of any visual impairments.

·         Exercise program: Keep exercising. Exercise not only releases endorphins that make you feel better, but strengthens your muscles to help reduce the risk of falling. Talk to your doctor about recommended exercises.

·         Footwear: Comfortable, well-fitting shoes with nonskid grips are recommended. Seniors who use canes should be sure that the rubber tip is not worn down.

·         Dizziness: When shifting positions, and rising from a seated position, it's not uncommon for blood pressure to drop. This condition, known as postural hypotension, is a common cause of falls. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you experience any lightheadedness.

It’s important to keep your doctor or caregiver in the loop on all medical-related issues. Let them know if you feel faint, notice your vision deteriorating, and of course, let them know if you have ever fallen. A previous fall is one of the strongest predictors for recurring falls.
