MediNurse Offers Tips on how to Avoid Scam Artists

Unfortunately, scamming is commonplace these days. Seniors are an easy target because of their trusting nature. Generally, older Americans are hesitant to report fraud as they don’t know who to report it to. Not to mention the fact that most seniors have excellent credit and a bulk of savings makes them attractive to con artists.

Here are some things seniors can proactively do in order to decrease their chances of financial fraud.

  • Set up direct deposit with your bank. Send social security checks, investment checks and more directly to your bank to avoid mail theft.

  • As discussed in the previous post, avoid telemarketers by signing up for the “Do Not Call” registry. You can do that by calling 888-382-1222 from the phone you wish to register, or by registering online at https://www.donotcall.gov/.

  • Watch out for Medicare Drug Discount Card scams. These discount cards cannot be sold over the phone or via door-to-door salesmen. Medicare does not charge maintenance or processing fees either. To apply for the card, visit ww.medicare.gov or call 1-800-Medicare.

  • Take time to research companies, be wary of unsolicited offers and never be afraid to ask questions.

  • Remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

In this technology era, it is easier for scam artists to prey on vulnerable, unsuspecting victims. Talk to a trusted family member or your MediNurse caregiver if you suspect suspicious behavior. MediNurse is considered the most selective agency in this area. Our staff must undergo a stringent screening process both prior to being employed and annually for the duration of their employment.
