Everything You Need in an Emergency Storm Kit

St. Louis is located in the heart of tornado alley. And, in the winter, we take a beating with harsh snow and ice storms. MediNurse is urging all senior citizens to be prepared with an emergency storm kit. The kit should include supplies that last at least three days. Storm kit essentials include: • Water (one gallon per person per day with a three day supply). • Canned or dried food—peanut butter is good source of protein. • A flashlight with extra batteries and an extra bulb • Candles and dry matches • A battery-operated radio with extra batteries • A first aid kit with plastic gloves • A week’s supply of medications and medical items • A blanket • Sanitary items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc. • Facial tissue • Trash bags • Work gloves and duct tape • Cash—after the aftermath of the storm, ATM’s and banks might be out of order due to power outages so remember, “Cash is King.” Other items that may be very useful include reading material with a reading light, crossword puzzles, card games and more. And, don’t forget your pets! Consider getting your dog or cat chipped for easy tracking and be sure to add pet food supplies and toys to the emergency kit. Talk to your caregiver to devise an emergency action plan. Let your caregiver know where your storm kit is located and where you will go in case of a severe storm.
