Celebrating National Lawn and Garden Month

MediNurse, St. Louis’ premier healthcare provider of private duty and corporate wellness programs, celebrates National Lawn and Garden Month. MediNurse works with seniors to help them live independently while remaining in their home.

According to the National Gardening Association, more than 91 million U.S households participate in some lawn or garden activity, and 28 million of those participating are over the age of 55. MediNurse understands gardening can be difficult and sometimes frustrating for those coping with physical limitations such as arthritis. Here are a few tools that can help seniors overcome limitations in the garden:

·         Fist Grip Garden Tools: This lineup helps reduce hand and wrist pain, and can be fitted with an optional arm support cuff. Each tool is lightweight and brightly colored.

·         New Tractor Scoot: This contoured tractor-style seat is adjustable in height and allows the user to sit comfortably and steer around garden beds without getting up.

·         Window box planters (self-watering): These can be mounted on a fence, wall or window sill, providing an alternative to gardening. Bonus! The “self-watering” feature reduces watering chores and helps keep plants moist and healthy.

·         Raised container gardens: These give seniors the ability to garden while standing up.

·         Hanging baskets: These offer patio or porch gardeners a low-maintenance gardening option.

Accessing the outdoors is often therapeutic for seniors. Preliminary research indicates seniors who spend time outdoors may derive health benefits such as better sleeping patterns, less pain, decreased verbal agitation, and increased longevity.
