The Truth about Triglycerides

MediNurse offers triglyceride facts.

Triglycerides are a type of fat found in your blood. Your body releases them for energy in between meals. You need some triglycerides, but a high level of triglycerides can contribute to the clogging of your arteries which puts you at risk for stroke, heart attack or heart disease.

Reducing your caloric intake will reduce your risk of high triglycerides. Healthy lifestyle choices are the best way to lower and maintain a proper triglyceride range. A simple blood test will measure triglyceride levels. Normal triglyceride levels are below 150. If your triglyceride level is high, you can lower it by:

  • Getting medical treatment for the problem causing the high triglycerides (obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, certain medicines and consuming large amounts of alcohol all contribute to high triglycerides).
  • Following a healthy diet low in sugars and carbohydrates.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Taking cholesterol-lowering medicines.
