Seniors Are At Great Risk for Heat Stroke
Seniors are at great risk for heat stroke, MediNurse offers tips.
Seniors are at great risk for heat stroke and heat-related illness. This summer has been especially hot so it’s important to know the warning signs of a heat stroke.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a heat stroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature. The body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. In a severely overheated house, for example, body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided.
If you encounter a senior who is in an overheated environment, look for the warning signs of a heat stroke, including: extremely high body temperature (above 103°F), lack of sweating, a rapid or strong pulse, a throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion or unconsciousness. Seek immediate medical attention if you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms.
